A big chunk of Americans don’t travel and know little about world (or domestic) geography. A lot of us are oddly prejudiced about other US states (“flyover country”). Your family sounded ignorant and tone-deaf at first but the comment about the white baby was the clincher. Some families do come around & get educated when a new member isn’t like them…but some just never get it. Sorry to hear you & your wife had to deal with that & kudos for moving on.
