This crime occurred in my neighborhood over a decade ago, but I didn’t hear about it until I clicked on an episode of “A Killer Lives Here” in which a man named John Duck told the story of growing up with his disturbed brother, Kevin.

This is also the story of a terrific woman, by all accounts, who hooked up with a psychopath on the heels of her divorce.

Her name was Dawna, and everything changed for her when she began dating the much younger, 28-year-old Kevin Duck.

Dawna was a dispatcher at the Village police department, so the story made national news.

Kevin, according to his brother John and the rest of his family, was a wild boy who grew into a violent criminal.

Son of a Preacher

The three Duck siblings were raised in a rural, religious community where their father, Luther, was a preacher. Kevin was the eldest, and a few years behind him came John, then their baby sister.

The Duck family hunted and raised their own food, according to The Cinemaholic, as did most other families in Luther’s congregation.
