As a nation, we are getting fatter and more diabetic--that is a fact and it's at an alarming rate. Diet culture has grown out of trying to solve these problems, but it's a bad solution because low-fat diets do not work for more than a few weeks or months. This doesn't mean not dieting is a fix, however. We are still getting fatter. The fix is in recognizing our huge problem in choosing low-fat, sugary foods over high-fat, natural foods. We were a lot better off before we started eating "6-11 servings of grains" every day and spiking insulin all day with 4 or 5 or 6 meals--back in the 1960s when we were mostly thin, and our moms cut back on carbs to lose weight. Our USDA Guidelines are a big part of the current problem, but it's been 50 years now of horrible eating and grains + processed foods are the new normal. The advice we get about "healthy eating" is exactly what the wellness industry pushes: lots of fruit and veg and "heart-healthy" grains. The opposite is necessary: meats, full-fat foods, and virtually no sugar. Grains are not a health food.
