Depression is treated differently than most other illnesses. No one asks you to look inside and fix cancer, diabetes, or a stroke. This BS is similar to the deep, abiding misunderstanding of how alcoholism works -- it's an affliction, not a choice. I had my first depression at age 11 due to the trauma of multiple moves and a bipolar, hospitalized mother, along with undiagnosed autism and ADHD, so it was something that happened to me. That experience set me up for a lifetime of depression. It's a tragedy, not a glitch, and asking the depressed person to fix it by thinking harder or whatever just adds to the burden. But until you have it, it's very hard to understand the nature of it.
