Excellent chronicle of ageism in action. I saw the writing on the wall a couple of years ago. The only job at 55 I would be able to keep was high school teaching, because everyone is desperate for teachers, because...yeah, it generally sucks and isn't getting better. I moved to a much cheaper place to leave in a flyover state and took up online work. My husband, who is 70, has been fortunate to not become a victim of ageism. He works at a University and has retained employment through several grants, various skills, but most of all a loyal boss who is also older. I've been lucky, but it's frustrating to feel the sense of helplessness when your economic opportunities disappear through no fault of your own, despite advanced degrees. I took my prime earning years for granted, that's for sure.
