Excellent perspective on sleep. Trying to make up for "lost sleep" is tempting but impossible. Best to avoid operating heavy machinery...but otherwise--if I wake up at 3:30 I get up at 4 or so. "Trying to sleep" is torture and leads to grogginess when I drag myself out of bed at 6:30 (having not slept), already feeling that the day has defeated me.
