For most of human history, there were not enough people. Small tribes could often benefit from more people to improve chances of survival. Then agriculture came along and humanity crested an important mountaintop. We've been hurtling down the other side ever since, and in the early 1960s, the birthrate began to drop because there are way too many people on this planet. Now we have more homosexuality and gender fluidity, more childfree, and more childless individuals because all those things contribute to lower birth rates. But the pull of biology and cultural norms is strong. The reason there is so much vociferous hatred of homosexuals and women who dare to stay single/have abortions/remain childless is because reproducing is baked in as the highest virtue. In reality, having kids is (was) a crucial survival tactic that has now turned against us. We are at an interesting point in human history, when not reproducing has become the better "choice."
