Here is a perspective from someone diagnosed a year ago, at the age of 57. My whole life looks different now. I don't think ASD or ADHD are disabilities; we are in the minority, and we are treated as such. We have to work harder to be understood. We have to hide parts of ourselves or can't get/keep employment. You are right--it's about productivity. Our brains evolved this way to help the group, and the truth few see or understand is our existence as a group is more important than our individual lives. So we contribute, but that doesn't mean our lives are easy. If we can evolve, and climate change doesn't wipe us out, someday we'll be past this barbaric idea that ADHD and ASD are disorders. We've contributed so much to society, it's a joke to think our thinking style is pathological. Left-handedness is still considered "pathological" and that's absurd, too.
