Higher Ed has become more and more like other bloated bureaucracies (the mlitary comes to mind), and often after getting an advanced degree the best place to use it is....well, working at a University. The worst of Higher Ed is the absurd luxury dormitories with their 'amenities'. Maybe that's not the worst, perhaps it's the refusal of colleges to act in definitive, socially progressive ways: fighting sexism and racism, promoting Green initiatives, and teaching self-sufficiency. Or perhaps it's the self-sustaining "we won't let you fail" mentality that keeps kids in college who can't cope and don't achieve--so their parents or their loans keep paying tuition.
