I can relate to this but my other issue was being autistic and undiagnosed, so the steady social rejection took a toll. My parents were baffled as to how I could be "gifted" yet make poor grades, and so was I. Girls were rarely diagnosed autistic back then. My self-esteem issues are a combination of parental disappointment and societal rejection. The gap between being "gifted" and constant (mysterious) failure is a hard row to hoe.
