I live and work in a gated community full of seniors, and 3 months ago began a job as a police dispatcher. People call up about scams fairly frequently - maybe 2 to 3 a week. If they were taken and lost money, the officers will go out and do a report. If they were merely threatened, there is no report so I tell them to never give out any information online, always ask for a callback number, and do some research before calling back. Gift cards are a common ploy. We interrupted a scam-in-progress recently where a woman was reported missing by her family, but she was down at the bank getting cash so she could go buy MORE gift cards. She was already out a few grand. This woman could drive but had some memory problems. Bastards who pray on older people, especially those with health issues, should sink to the lowest circle of hell. Infuriatingly, you have to get highly cynical and hyper vigilant to avoid scams (at any age) these days.
