I live in a gated community with a lot of older people. Some of the "old ways" still stick here, and I'm grateful. People still write and take checks. The bank keeps the same employees. The fire department will come over and check your smoke detector batteries. Even though I'm not religious (I mean I go to the UU) I sort of appreciate all the voluntary good works done by the church ladies, who are everywhere. I know the guys at the hardware store. And so forth. When I have to collide with big city life, sometimes it's a bit of a culture shock.
