I live in a quasi-retirement community, where the average age is 67. It's the largest gated community in the US but not the best place to age in place because you have to drive, and the roads are hilly and winding. Some give up their cars, some don't. Many drink regularly. I watch the denial, as I am still in my fifties. It's caused me to plan way ahead because many of these folks assume they will age like superstars, and that's the wrong assumption. Some will, yes, but we just don't know how we will age, or when we will lose our ability to live independently. I recently started converting our basement into an efficiency apartment and building a level path to it, as I expect I might end up living there one day while renting out the rest of the house for income.
