I live in rural Arkansas and have a theory about people who never leave rural places, never travel, never want to see and/or live in a larger world. They don't like change or "otherness." They are comfortable living in a small village with the same people who look like them, act like them, think like them. The closed-minded stay, the open-minded leave. Sounds like your Swiss village.
