I recall Socrates saying the study of philosophy is practice for dying, and our lives should be focused on a good death. I think he meant by this a heroic death, like Leary. I shall read more about your views on Augustine, which bring to mind the explanations of how we became "individuals" in The Origins of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind.
