I used to teach high school. One of my pet peeves was other teachers (usually women) who were suffering from matryr syndrome. I think they came in with martyr syndrome and that's how they lasted in the profession as long as they did. They would be married, with their own young kids, teaching Special Ed, getting a PhD, serving on a committee or two, and helping coach the wrestling team. It was absurd, and I got guilted or shamed into doing more than is humanly possible way too often. Setting boundaries was impossible. Then I started passively resisting. Then I quit teaching. It only took four years.
