I wondered about the controversy, too. I think a lot of it stems from distrust of the Alabama police in general (not necessarily Ozark) and that he pulled the wool over his community’s eyes for so long. Also — no one there knew about his military record. A lot of people either don’t understand how DNA evidence works or believe police might make up the whole thing (I think police can be corrupt but why not frame someone they hated, like a career criminal?). The more I looked into McCraney, the clearer it was he had a hidden life. Agree, possible narcissist.
