I worked in tobacco control for years. In public health, many lives could be save by getting people to quit smoking. Big Tobacco and Big Oil have much in common, and the only way Big Tobacco was defeated was by calling out their BS (they knew exactly what they were doing by engineering a highly addictive product) with the Law. It took years, and a coordinated effort but huge strides have come from reducing smoking rates from 40% to 15% nationally. Big Oil needs lawsuits, too. Standard deflection from Big Tobacco was that smoking was a personal choice--despite the fact that they targeted children and teens to take up the habit.
