I wouldn't mind moving to another country but since I couldn't make that leap, partly due to my husband's job and perspective, I moved to Arkansas. Housing is much cheaper here. I eventually realized writing pays nothing and got a job, hoping for benefits. Then I came to understand my job would require working graveyard shift on 6-month rotations. I am 57, so I had to decide: should I ruin my health, quality of life, and probably longevity with shiftwork, or make less money and get no health benefits? If I lived in a country with reasonable health insurance (I pay $755 a month and it will be $800 next year and $900 a few years after that, and so forth), none of this would matter. I could retire and live frugally. Sadly, even AR isn't cheap enough. It's beautiful here, though, so if you decide Spain is too much trouble, you can hide out in the woods.
