I write a lot of true crime and have come across other torture cases. It's often paraphilia--sexual sadism, usually mixed with deep-seated misogyny. I just finished writing a piece on the Toy Box Killer from New Mexico, and it was difficult to write--very sick man. And his accomplices (there were 3) are all free today. There is no remorse because they enjoy it, and they don't get better. Pretty rare disorder, thankfully. It seems he got a life sentence, but so did this poor victim.
