I'm not surprised by this, because even though I have a handful of stories that have performed beyond 5K reads, the way I earn is all over the board. There isn't a formula. High-quality pieces sometimes get very few reads, whereas others I spent little time on can get 10K or more. I've concluded Medium doesn't pay well, bottom line. So I write for fun and focus on finishing my true crime book and finding a publisher.
