Income is largely based on luck. Poorer people don't want to talk about thei bad luck, and rich people don't want to admit their privilege. The shame comes from equating money with virtue, which is ridiculous but we do it anyway. My husband used to be a therapist, and reports people would talk about anything--affairs, kinky sex, major trauma--but no one wanted to talk about their money.
