It's a lot easier to have empathy for the homeless when you don't run up against violent, scary men. In my old neighborhood, we had an encampment in a dry river bed. They were loud, using drugs, left huge piles of trash, and would occasionally wander up to someone's house. A retired cop living in our 'hood periodically went down to speak with them, just to keep tabs, but that wasn't a solution, either.
