It's early in the morning, the guy or gal is dressed in riot gear, there's no robbery, and he/she is clearly searching for something. The killer's demeanor is also odd...seems to be in no hurry, nor worried about making noise with that hammer. It seems likely whoever left the creepy messages targeted her. The riot gear is really strange--did they wear it as a disguise or because they were afraid Missy would fight back? I'm sure the cops have better theories than mine, though.
