Join a church. If you run into trouble, they can help. Faith is optional...most of it's social, anyway. Plus, it's a chance to help others and you do not need to tithe if you are poor. Also--there's a lot of cheap "poor people" sports including basketball at the park and disc golf (free courses and you'll even find discs every now and then).
