Labeling kids as different and singling them out rarely helps. I was pulled aside to read in Kindergarten and all I wanted to do was fingerpaint. I was put into gifted classes after an IQ test in 2nd grade. By Jr High, I'd been with the same group of kids for a while. But the label made me hyper-aware whenever I failed, made me hide my mistakes, and made me stop trying to do things I wasn't good at right away. Meanwhile, I didn't get coaching or help with my social problems....which I don't blame on the schools because they were subtle since I masked a lot.
