Neurotypicals also exist on a spectrum. Some are high IQ, some are low IQ. Some are gorgeous, some are homely. Some are athletic, some are clumsy. The reason high-functioning autistics can function in society is that they've developed strategies to deal with social rejection, overstimulation, and the various mental health effects (anxiety, depression, etc) that accompany being socially isolated. I think Sir Anthony leaned into creativity as a way to cope. I am late diagnosed (at 57) and still searching for a tribe of like-minded people. It doesn't surprise me Hopkins is one of us. He's struggled with depression, anxiety, and alcoholism but turned his intense focus into creativity. It's very inspiring to read about someone coming out of the autism closet so late in life and to see someone overcome so many challenges. Gives me hope.
