Never in the history of our species have we had 80% of the population overweight. It IS a health issue, both individually and in terms of public health.
I agree 100%: "Eat less, do more "is terrible weight loss advice. It's too generalized and couples exercise with weight loss. Doctors aren't great at counseling patients on anything, be it quitting smoking or exercising or weight loss--that has as much to do with "doctor culture" as it does with white privilege. But it's important to acknowledge that most Americans who are overweight--millions of us--do want to lose weight because they don't feel well and/or don't like the way they look--that's not white culture, it's nature;. The problem is white culture...sure, because white culture is dominant in America and with it comes greedy corporate food manufacturers and unaffordable medical care. A lot of low SES families are getting fatter and losing health because they can't afford quality foods and don't have access to healthcare providers who know how to explain "stop eating the junk food you can afford." No, thin isn't always good but there's no way I'll ever be convinced that we as a society should be okay accepting that 1 out of 2 Americans is currently obese.
