Not being giving enough responsibility as a kid isn’t an advantage, either, sorry to report. It sets you up to resent the process of taking care of yourself. There’s a happy medium. Kids who are coddled have to learn a bunch of basic crap they should’ve been taught in their late childhood & teens. My chores as a kid included: yearly scrubbing grout off my shower tile, daily setting and clearing the dinner table, and trimming the insanely bug-filled ivy off the chimney once a year. I got a job at 11 because on some level, it didn’t feel like I had enough responsibility. Although the word adulting is highly annoying to me, too — I think my reasons are different. My generation wasn’t so self-conscious and didn’t have jargon for everything we did.
