One of the reasons, in fact the main reason IMHO, that autism goes undetected is because vast numbers of females and BIPOC continue to go undiagnosed. The condition itself doesn't preclude having (fake) social skills, but in males we see a more "extreme)" form where social skills are the most obvious problem. As a result, ASD is largely defined as an issue of social ineptitude, when in fact it has more to do with communicating differently, thinking differently, and numerous other markers. This similar situation of missed diagnoses occurs in ADHD, which is viewed as an "attention deficit" rather than a difference in attention, ie, alternating between hyperfocus and lack of focus.
