Part of the problem is people confuse the terms gender (socially influenced) and sex (biological). Since we are loathe to see ourselves as limited by biology and deluded into believing choice is the highest ideal, we easily accept that gender--by definitnion, a social construct--is mostly neogtiable. We can be furries but the sane among us know we aren't foxes or wolves or dolphins. We should teach our children what being human is, and how we are animals who are limited by our biology but have some choice. Yet, we can't because then we'd have to have Sex Ed classes and admit to kids that sex is real. So, to avoid the complexity and denial, we fall back on bumper sticker slogans like, "Gender is a social construct," which loses its meaning since, by its very nature, gender is different from sex. That's why the word exists. It's not all or nothing. Gender includes biology. Biology does not include gender.
