The connection between Vit D and more health issues among black people has made often made me wonder. As a very light skinned person living in Arizona most of my adult life, I still had trouble getting enough Vit D due to limiting my sun exposure. But, the sun is by far the best way to get Vit D. Most common skin cancers are curable with early detection and research shows they are more related to burns in childhood. (The really deadly variety, melanoma, may have more to do with ill health than sun exposure. This type is not found on sun-exposed parts of the body). Being in the sun has other benefits, as well, including normalizing circadian rhythms. For detail on this topic, a book called "Embrace the Sun" makes the scientific argument that Vit D deficiency is far more dangerous than sun exposure, as long as you use common sense with sunlight.
