The crux this article lays bare is that many managers got ahead through politics rather than productivity or competence, and it's these people who are most afraid of a less political environment. The "shared space" is one in which they can dominate. The paradox is that asking workers to be "productive" means their output is actually measured. When you begin comparing actual productivity, it' crystal clear who is working and who is posing.
