The HSP/Autism problem shines a bright light on how stigma works. It's white women who mostly identify with this HSP label because even though they are distressed, they would rather identify with a socially acceptable "positive" label than learn the truth about the condition of autism. I have a friend whose brother is autistic and she is HSP, but I'm quite sure she's autistic, too. Her brother is on disability, housebound, has been cared for by his parents his whole life, and has other conditions such as a seizure disorder; she is a highly functioning professional. But she also goes silent for weeks at a time and because I'm AuDHD and lean toward friends like me, the evidence seems clear. Yet I wonder if I will ever hear from her about how she's figured out she's autistic. HSP is a big, big problem in the female autistic community because millions of women identify with this label that does nothing but muddy the waters and water down neurodivergent activism.
