The Randle Cycle clarifies that you can lose weight with a low fat (very low fat), high carb approach OR a low-carb, high fat approach. When you mix fats and carbs, then the trouble begins. It seems as if people on keto who still want treats are able to reduce carbs by focusing on net carbs. But I take issue with your statement, "We all have [carb cravings]. and no one is free of this essential biological need."
I do agree that no one is free of the desire to eat a second donut after the first donut, but that's a manipulation of biology.
Carbs aren't essential. Fats are. Carbs cause cravings because eating them causes a desire for more in a much more pronounced way than eating fat does. You can overdo carbs but if you overdo fat you get nauseated. We almost have to overdo carbs because their energy burn is brief, and we quickly need more after a meal of berries and grains.
