The vast majority of people die in their homes, not assisted living or nursing homes. This fact is poorly understood. Going to a "nursing home" isn't normal, and isn't the most common fate for Americans and certainly not in other nations. Elderly people who are still ambulatory, without serious cognitive problems, have a right to choose, despite what their children or anyone else might think--like the 90-year-old farmer who worked to the end of his life. It's a shame we can't better regulate or control driving beyond our expiration date, as that puts others at risk, but when it comes to our homes, the choices are often not easy or obvious until after the fact--and even then it's hard to know what the right course might have been.
