This article hits the nail on the head. A similar thing has happened to teachers, who are now expected to be social workers, second parents and emergency medical workers. As hard as I found teaching high school, to me policing looked far more difficult--all day interacting with people, many of whom are strangers, and any misstep could be fatal.
