This is me 100%. Did well in school until 4th grade, when we began changing classes. Jr High was a nightmare and my grades plummeted from perfect to 2.6 gpa by the time I graduated high school. My IQ was tested at 140 (VIQ 150). I suspect I am also autistic. In addition to poor grades (had the exact same mediocre gpa in college), I was socially overwhelmed. I've suffered from anxiety and depression since college, been an "underachiever" despite every therapy on the planet and considerable $$. I have two master's degrees and can't get a job. Thankfully, at 57 I don't have to but I'd like to. I remember feeling like a constant disappointment to my parents and later to myself. It's kind of mind-boggling how much I've been searching for help and feeling invisible and often, resented. I can't really tell if autism is to blame because the ADHD description fits me to a tee, 'getting my shit together' never seems to happen. Thanks for this article. I feel seen, heard, and less alone!
