This is standard "management" thinking. We own you for 8 hours a day and you'd better be working the whole time or it doesn't count and since I have power over you, get your ass moving. The level of stupidity is breathtaking, and the point of work (i.e. getting the job done) is lost entirely. This problem is so absurd that when I was a teacher who routinely took work home and often worked most of Saturday, we'd having mandatory meetings on our "teacher work days" when we had no classes, so we had to come into the school for no reason other than to be there for a 1/2 hour point less meeting, then were required to be in our classroom grading or whatever--things easily done at home. It's little minds trying to control others, believing that management means telling other people what to do.
