This makes so much sense. Empathy is developed under specific circumstances, of course! I wonder how this relates to the "highly sensitive person (HSP)" category. This topic also brings to mind The Drama of the Gifted Child, which posits that highly sensitive, intelligent children are damaged by almost any degree of narcissism from/in parents.
