To me he seemed a complex case of both psychopathy and psychosis, and maybe also a personality disorder. It reminds me a bit of an after-the-fact analysis of what Hitler’s mental health problems were, a paper put together by a group of distinguished psychiatrists. They concluded he was at least an anti-social personality disorder and had severe PTSD. They also thought he was a narcissistic personality disorder and probably schizophrenic. I agree — Richard Chase wasn’t faking it.
