To me the comparison comes when I am walking in my very isolated, rural neighborhood. There are two dangers: roving dogs and people. If I see a dog off leash--and I have, in the middle of nowhere, not a house in sight!--I get out my pepper spray and turn around. If I see a pickup truck parked in a cut-de-sac, same. I would rather encounter a loose dog as I think I have a better chance against it. Also, in the times I've encountered pickup trucks, they are always populated by lone men. I've never seen a woman just sitting in her pickup truck. Some men will never understand the risks women face because they want to keep blaming the victim/potential victim for feeling fear, worry, etc.
