To some degree, this is also true about society's view of women -- the "madonna and the whore syndrome" goes along with misogyny. Since our cultural/human perspective is mostly male, this is the culture others anyone who isn't understood. It comes from a dominant majority who is threatened, inconvenienced, and generally freaked out by anyone who is different.
