We are a deeply self-centered people. The "America is #1!" BS is directly related to people who believe they, individually, are #1. We punish the poor, the sick, and the old out of fear of becoming them. We blame the victim and we have whole institutions--the GOP, FOX News, purveyors of fake Jesus, ie churches, an irretrievably broken health care system--that support victim blaming.
