We moved often during my childhood. I went to a different school in 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th grade. I recently discovered research that moving frequently, especially between the ages of 10 and 15, is highly traumatizing for kids. It's strongly associated with depression later in life (women) and delinquency. When I began to think about this, I realized all the moves are plenty to explain my lifelong battle with depression, constant moves, instability in adulthood, and struggles with making and keeping friends. Those moves were combined with a mother in and out of a mental hospital and having to grow up too soon, too alone. At 58, I'm only now starting to realize I wasn't as resilient as I'd imagined.
